Steel is good?
The fatigue strength of carabiners is not dependant on the
material used, but rather on the construction! By continuous
oscillation tests, aluminium carabiners sometimes showed
much higher fatigue strengths than steel carabiners. Steel
is usually more fatigue resistant, harder and less vulnerable
to corrosion than aluminium, however these disadvantages
can easily be outweighed, when the aluminium carabiner
is constructed with appropriately larger dimensions. High
quality aluminium alloys have a considerably better
strength/weight ratio than steel.
The breakage in the steel carabiner (left) arose after
1.739.700 loading oscillations between 5 and 50 kg. The
steel carabiner (right) broke after 287.000 loading oscillations
between 7 and 70 kg.
Pin Lock carabiner endured 5.000.000 loading oscillations
between 40 and 400 kg undamaged.
