Woody Valley clarification to published writing.
There are different versions of this musketon model, sold by different brands and this is just one of them.
I'm pretty sure all of these different versions are produced in the same factory of China, which is clear and it's certain that they haven't been produced in Italy by CAMP, as the CAMP version is also produced in China.
The story of our CAMP version is as follows:
We started using these musketons in February 2011, and they put on the market, at least about 55.000 pieces until it was replaced by the current model ′′ Skyway ′′ in early 2017.
In both reported cases, the musketons were over 4 years old and we don't know the use and treatment they had been subjected to. Pictures show visible damage to the musketon, which shouldn't justify its breakage, of course).
Well, 2 55.000 pcs manufactured over 9 years doesn't make this mosquet a defective product.
I think that has been demonstrated in the past by breaking other musketons of other makes and models and considering the two cases acheted with our musketon, that due to the own dynamic that flight can cause, it is recommended to reduce as a precaution, life Useful Musketones 3 years or 500 hours flight.
Considering the different brands existing, there must be at least 400.000 units on the market. We already stopped using them over two years ago. But I think some companies are still watching them.
We have registered four cases / accidents:
- Two with our version of CAMP, which happened on the ground without damage.
- One on a Gin Gliders version.
- Another one in a version of Niviuk.
Do you know of any other cases or breakage?

In the spring of 2020, a pilot in Slovakia broke an aluminum musketon in his Woody Valley Harness. Technical studies showed that it was a permanent vibration breakage (material fatigue). In Slovakia, therefore, even a safety advisory for this type of musketon was issued. However, other documented incidents in which these musketones were broken had already occurred in previous years.

The aluminum musketons of Italian manufacturer Camp, which produces such models in China, in a very similar design not only for Woody Valley, but also for other harness manufacturers, caught attention due to breakages. One would think such musketons should simply be removed from the market because of possible construction defects. But that would be too simplistic a conclusion. Because it would mean not suppressing the fundamental problem behind this. All aluminum musketons with a lateral pressure opening are more susceptible to permanent vibrations due to the material's own functional design. For this reason, for example, Woody Valley Harness Operating instructions also recommend that musketones be replaced every two years! In all previous cases where there was a breakage, this deadline had been clearly exceeded.

It's also the pilot's responsibility: if you want to fly with light aluminum musketons due to weight savings and is not just a very occasional flyer (which only flies a few hours a year), you must take the replacement intervals recommended by the manufacturers. In addition, aluminum musketons ′′ cracked ", no matter their age, should no longer be used. If you want to deepen the topic, you can read on. Below is a text on the same topic I posted on DHV Info 197 in 2015.

The importance of the replacement of musketones

Musketones have a limited lifespan. Depending on the design, manufacturers recommend changing them after two to eight years. Pilots must comply. All riders use them, but very few people think of them. As a rule, you will find a pair installed in each newly purchased harness. But after two years of flight use at the latest, some pre-concepts about musketones should be abandoned. After all, you hang your life on that piece of metal. And even if breaking charges according to specifications go far beyond their own usage limits, one thing must be aware: musketons age and must be replaced every certain intervals to be safe. Almost 20 years ago, a series of musketon breakages caused stir in the paragliding scene. At that time, the German Free Flight Association (DHV) initiated safety investigations and concluded that there was a significantly greater risk of breaking just for a certain type of musketon. It was a special version of AustriAlpin's Parafly Automatic Harness Musketon, that is, those who were finished with a bright and particularly hard chrome surface. Small cracks in this finish could continue fast in the aluminum body load. Musketoons of this type were ′′ removed ′′ via a security message, taken from the market and no longer allowed to use.

Back then, VHD tests revealed other findings that remain valid until today. Among other things, many types of musketones, which open and close with a pressure mechanism, were shown to fail to achieve complete traction during the flight. For the piece to easily open, it needs a certain amount of slack. Only with a higher weight load, the musketon bends so much that the closed hook can now act as a loading element. In normal flight, especially with light pilots, there's usually a little game. In fact, it's not much more than flying with a fully open musketon. Consequently, metal is subject not only to traction, but also to flexing forces. This may lead to so-called tension cracks that slowly eat the material until the metal breaks down suddenly.

The burdens that a musketon has to bear constantly change during flight, leading to small vibes. A pressure-shuttled musketon is slightly folded in thermal flight up to 25 times per second and recovered. Measurements have proven that. These permanent vibes fatigue metal over time. For safety reasons, it is advisable to comply with replacement intervals recommended by manufacturers. Each manufacturer provides different information for its types of musketons, depending on the material they are made of, the thickness of the material and the shape of forging they have and how closure is achieved. Recommended replacement intervals are typically two to three years or 500 hours of flight for fast-closing musketons made of aluminum and five years or 1500 hours flight for those made of steel.

Special shape aluminum musketons may be made of Titanal, it's an alloy where cracks spread somewhat less quickly than with the Zicral duraluminum alloy commonly used for musketons, but they also have a recommended five-year lifespan. Finsterwalder Charly's Pin-Lock Musketon has even eight years of replacement term. Pase insurance has no game, but a steel slider as a lockdown and load support element, push-pin type like those used to fix delta wing cables.

In addition to the literal recount of the years of use of the musketon, pilots should also rely on their common sense. Even slightly folded musketons, recognizable by the fact that pressure lock is slightly stuck or when thread blocks cannot easily be rotated with two fingers, they must be replaced immediately, regardless of whether they have reached the permitted years.

Attention should also be paid regularly to the outward condition of musketones. Aluminum is a relatively soft material. If you hit stones or rattles along something hard, damage appears quickly. They may be the starting point for deeper and more invisible cracks. Especially when such cracks or quirks become visible on inner curves corners of musketons, it's time to buy new musketons, even if the manufacturer's recommended lifespan has yet to be reached.
